This homage to soaring through the clouds began when I found this 1950s toy airplane. From the side, this plane was kind of nondescript, so I suspended it flat so that the nifty foldable wings would be visible. Once I had the aircraft displayed, it became a quest to see how many other flying references I could make, including: The spinning top (“top dog”), the countdown blocks, aces (“flying aces”), rockets, and even Snoopy as the WWI Flying Ace.
Adding blasts of abstraction into traditional still life compositions allows me to give the realism collector something different. Here, to get the perfect aged wood look, I painted the background with a light undercoat, topped this layer with a darker grey wash, and then laid brown paper on top of the canvas. When I peeled back the paper, I was left with the weathered-looking base. I then used a pocket comb to add wood grain texture, and finally painted in nail holes and the gaps between the boards.
My neighborhood in post-war England was built in an old bombing squadron base; in fact, my childhood home was the former officer’s mess. As a result, I love the nostalgia around mid-20th century aircraft.
The toy plane featured in Top Dog is die-cast metal, made by the Hubley company in the 1950s.
