Inspired by a vintage postcard, I present every fisherman’s dream - reeling in “the big one.”
There is so much action in Gone Fishing, from the funny postcard, to the truck and motorboat, to the fishing vignettes in the background. The beauty of creating a chalkboard-like background is that I can develop a complex backdrop without making the image feel cluttered.
Here, I’ve given the chalkboard a scene of two men reeling ‘em in on a day at the lake. To make the background look like an actual chalkboard, I drew on the painted surface with oil pastels and “erased” with a rag before redrawing the final scene and painting the foreground.
The blue painter’s tape was created in the trompe l'oeil style, a lovely visual illusion where a painted subject looks real - as if there is really a piece of tape stuck to the canvas. (There isn’t!)
The truck and boat were gifts from my wife, Sharon, who found these little beauties on Ebay. They are reproductions of vintage toys and, in actuality, are tiny - only about 4” altogether. The fishing lure is old, and was probably homemade.
I’ve also created a companion piece to Gone Fishing, which features a winter sport to contrast with the summery joy of fishing. You can see the companion here: Hit the Slopes by Richard Hall.
