Star Chaser is really two portraits in one. On the surface, it is a portrait of a lovely weathered pedal car - a perfect still life subject. But go deeper, and you see a painting that is an ode to memories of the “atomic age” of the 50s and 60s when space travel was part of every child’s dreams.
This is one of those images that really blends my love of still life with abstract painting. While the foreground image is quintessential still life realism, the starry sky background is all painted with abstract techniques.
To achieve the background look, I painted layers of deep blue and then used spray bottle filled with a turpentine/paint wash to spritz on the stars. I kept misting the canvas until I was able to achieve the glow of a nighttime sky.
Lighting is dramatic to heighten the shadows of both the pedal car and the hand-folded origami stars.
The “Atomic Missile” was one of three pedal car versions the Murray Company produced in the 1950s and 60s. Each car had the same body with a different paint job.
