A crafty raven gathers gifts for his paramour
Tokens of love, purloined.
This tricksy fellow has gathered chocolate, a gold ring, little treasures in the form of shiny marbles, and the key to his heart (hanging from the vice) - all to dazzle the object of his affection.
Love is an abstract concept, so I wanted Secret Admirer to have feel of abstraction as well, hence the non-representational painting methods used for the background. I used big swaths of paint, generously applied, to achieve the whitewashed backdrop look. Also note the broad brushstrokes on the wooden box: these too, were painted with abstract art techniques.
Birds are both a delight and a challenge for the realist painter. The feathers must be perfect - if the painted feathers don’t have the sheen and texture of real feathers, the whole bird looks fake.
If you like Secret Admirer, I invite you to see its companion piece, Atonement.
