In Seafood Buffet, I feature a performing sea lion and seal, each hoping to receive a goldfish snack. The toy blocks spell what these fellows hope to achieve: seafood!
I used a chalkboard background to place the scene at Fisherman’s Wharf in California, choosing blue-green color to suggest the seaside sky. I drew on the surface with oil pastels and then rubbed away the pigment to leave little traces of “chalk” just like on a real chalkboard. After getting the right look, I drew the final background landscape.
You can see how I make my chalkboard effect in this video:
After my wife, Sharon, and I enjoyed a vacation to Monterey, California, I was inspired to incorporate seaside themes into my work. The sea lion and seal toys are Fisher-Price pull toys from the 1960s, with wooden bodies and paper lithographs for the printed faces and fur. The birds in the sky are hand-folded origami.
If you like Seafood Buffet, I invite you to see the companion image, Catch of the Day, also inspired by the same trip.
