Collectors who know my work are undoubtedly aware of my proclivity for pairing up lovely still life-appropriate produce with vintage toy trucks. The resulting image looks like food for a giant - imagine seeing a pickup puttering down the road carrying onions as big as the cab of the truck!
In Salsa Fresca, I’ve paired the ingredients for fresh tomato salsa with the oldest toy truck in my collection (circa 1920s-30s). The wooden wheels and weathered surface patina contrast beautifully with the fresh salsa vegetables.
In keeping with the rustic feel of the truck, I painted Salsa Fresca with the warm glow of a traditional still life image, similar to what the Dutch Masters would have done over 400 years ago. In particular notice the crispness of the shadows and the subtle gradation of the background from dark on the periphery to light in the center.
I also invite you to view the companion print to this image, Hot Rod that features the a fiery truck full of shiny hot peppers.
