    • 1950s glamour adds cachet to a successful shopping spree

      Retail Therapy was conceived at the request of my daughters-in-law, who wanted me to make an image geared toward my five (now six) granddaughters.

      This 1950’s pink pedal car was the perfect foundation; it was one of the few pedal cars of the era that was made and marketed to young girls. It's lovely stylings and sassy pink paint job seemed right at home with a day of hopping from boutique to boutique, and the idea for an image of a glamourous Paris shopping trip was born. Fantastique!

      To complete the scene, I added an antique crystal perfume atomizer, dainty white gloves, and hat boxes with scenes of Parisian life. I also couldn’t resist including the tiny replica of the Eiffel Tower - a present I received over 35 years ago from my wife, Sharon.


    • I wanted this painting to have a soft, delicate feel so the background and shadows are purposely velvety and muted. Lighting is from the lower right, making the brightest areas the front of the car. Notice how the light shines through the atomizer, giving the shadow a rosy glow. I moved the lighting around many, many times to get those lovely parallel shadows you see on the lower left.

      Other details

      This image went unnamed for a long time; none of the monikers I tried felt right. I showed this to an artist friend of mine and she said, “Oh, that looks like great retail therapy.” Bob’s your uncle! (That’s “There you go!” in American-speak.)

      The original painting was sold due to an odd bit of coincidence: A woman at an art show saw it who had just come back from shopping in Paris with her granddaughters.  She immediately bought the painting to decorate the girls’ room.

      All of our prints are finished with a coating that protects the print and enhances light-fastness; we use the highest quality pigmented inks with an estimated lifetime of 118 years.

      Canvas giclées: Edition of 50 (for all sizes), signed and numbered on the back of the piece. Archivally mounted or stretched and hand-coated with protectant. Framed canvas giclées are hand-framed in our studio with an espresso-colored frame with gold-tone lip. Unframed canvas giclées should not be framed with glass.

      Paper giclées: Edition of 250 for 12” x 16” sizes; edition of 125 for 18” x 24”. Printed on high-quality, acid-free paper and comes with a hand-cut mat that fits into a standard-size frame. We recommend that you use a frame with glass to ensure longevity of your paper print.
