    Heirlooms is the result of an antique buying trip I took to Texas in 2013. A dealer at the big Roundtop antique show had this amazing wagon: it is almost 100 years old and in pristine condition. The dealer called it a “barn find”, meaning it was had been sitting in storage, undisturbed, this whole time.

    As my wife, Sharon, drove through the Texas Hill Country, we came across roadside vegetable stands, selling these crazy pumpkins. The farmers in the area grew heirloom varieties - pumpkin species that had been around for centuries and were quite different from the round orange specimens you see in the grocery store. The pumpkins were all so beautiful to me that I ended up buying 12 to take home. I loved the idea of this vintage toy and these ancient foodstuffs together, and Heirlooms was born.

  • Rustic and mellow - that was the tone I wanted for this scene. To achieve this look, I used bright, but diffuse, natural light. The illumination highlights the deep lobes on the fruits and makes the century-old painted patina on the wheels glow.

    The image’s backdrop is made of old wood pallets, dis-assembled and re-assembled by yours truly. The wagon and bounty sit on vintage barn shelving. These two types of wood are harmonious with - yet different from - the wooden wagon body, in order to add interest and complexity to the image.

    The pumpkins I purchased managed to last almost six months before the Arizona heat did them in. During that time, I was able to paint several images featuring them. You can see more of them here: Richard Hall heirloom pumpkin images.

  • All Richard Hall prints are limited edition and hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

    All of our prints are finished with a coating that protects the print and enhances light-fastness; we use the highest quality pigmented inks with an estimated lifetime of 118 years.

    Canvas giclées: Edition of 50 (for all sizes), signed and numbered on the back of the piece. Archivally mounted or stretched and hand-coated with protectant. Framed canvas giclées are hand-framed in our studio with an espresso-colored frame with gold-tone lip. Unframed canvas giclées should not be framed with glass.

    Paper giclées: Edition of 250 for 12” x 12” sizes; edition of 125 for 20” x 20”. Printed on high-quality, acid-free paper and comes with a hand-cut mat that fits into a standard-size frame. We recommend that you use a frame with glass to ensure longevity of your paper print.
