Reminiscent of a vintage travelogue, this scene features a toy station wagon and trailer, loaded up for a western road trip.
The chalkboard background serves two purposes: 1) It keeps the focus of the setting on the car and trailer, without making the scene to busy with extra props; 2) The sketched background has the feel of a stage play with a hand-painted background - perfect for adding to the retro feel of the image.
To create that dusty chalkboard feel, I drew on the painted surface with oil pastels and then wiped them off, similar to erasing an actual chalkboard. Then I re-drew the final images before painting the foreground.
Note that the postcard and tape motif adds an element of trompe l'oeil, a visual illusion where the eye perceives the painted subject as real. When I add such elements to paintings, I frequently see people lean around to the side of the painting to see if I have actually stuck something to the canvas.
The car and trailer were found during separate antiquing trips, but each has a hitch that fits together, so I presume these were from the same toy company. The car didn’t come with suitcases; I used blocks of wood tied to the car with string to serve as my model.
On a personal note, shortly after I moved to the United States from England in 1978, one of the first places my new American bride took me was to the Grand Canyon. Twenty years later, I ran the canyon “rim to rim” in 7 hours.
