The gang’s all here - with a quack-quack here and a moo-moo there!
Ever since I’ve been collecting antiques to paint, I’ve been bringing home “Papa’s toys” for my seven grandchildren too. I’m a particular pushover for lovely old pull-toys from the 1950s with their wooden bodies, lithographed paper coverings, and fun noises and movements.
In E.I.E.I.O., I lined up all of the best farm toys in the collection and added a cheerful farmer, E-I-E-I-O blocks, and and a vintage egg carton to round out the scene.
These toys are all from the era when plastics were just starting to come into use - bits of plastic were used for a few components, but the bulk of the toy is wood and metal. In terms of the noises they make, the engineering is marvelous. There are no electronics or batteries - all noises are made with springs and bits of wood rubbing together. The Mother Goose toy is the best - she honks and waddles!

But chance intervened when a mischievous toddler added her two-cents worth to one of Richard’s still life settings, prompting Richard to see his work in an entirely new way. READ MORE
