Desert Walk

      • A tightrope walker navigates a rather prickly situation

How many times have you felt like you were maneuvering from one thorny thing after another? In Desert Walk, this intrepid acrobat feels your pain as he traverses this treacherous desert “landscape.”

      • Desert Walk is an inherently tense scene - imagine if you were balancing over a spiky outcropping that was four times your size! To play up the theatrics even more, I lit the scene as if it was in the center ring of a circus big top: The strong center spotlighting contrasted with the dark background adds a severe look to the performance.

The cacti were chosen for the visual interest they could bring - each one has a different coloration and spine appearance. The weathered terracotta posts were created with my oldest brushes, ones that can no longer provide crisp lines but make for dandy texturing of weathered-looking surfaces such as these.

        Other details

The star of this show is a Whirling Wilmer balancing toy from the early 1900s. He has a sharp pointy toe that will balance on anything, including a piece of string. Even though this toy is over 100 years old, it is still a marvel of engineering that provides endless fascination for my grandchildren.
