A fisherman and hungry gator team up to free these lunchbox captives
Catch and Release is another in my series ofcrazy contraptions. Hoping for a bite of the fish on the line, the alligator chomps the string. The pull on the string wobbles the fisherman, who lifts the lunchbox lid with his reel. Once the box is open, the imprisoned toys can escape.
The freestanding and counterbalanced toy is a wonderful bit of engineering. The fisherman’s arms are hinged and when he rocks back and forth and the fishing rod moves up and down. Balancing toys like this were popular in the 19th century; the one I have is a reproduction and does double duty as entertainment when grandchild bathtime rolls around.
The alligator is an old windup toy. My example is missing his tail so I had to research what the complete toy was supposed to look like, then built the tail out of clay and painted it to match the original.
