“There must be some kind of way out of here,” said the joker to the thief.
This tricksy magpie perches atop his ill-gotten gains in my interpretation of a rock music classic.
One of my favorite songs is All Along the Watchtower, written by Bob Dylan and performed by Jimi Hendrix. For years, the lyrics have been teasing my brain, wanting to come forth in a painting.
In my recent explorations of birds in my paintings, I started reading about magpies, the thieves of the bird world. The more I learned about magpies and their love of stealing shiny objects, the more this image came together. Note the key, the sliver of blue sky, and the open cage - all metaphors for finding “some way out of here.”
This painting combines the exacting realism of the bird and objects with an unrestrained abstract finish on the background - an effect achieved with broad, loose strokes of paint textured with lightly scratched lyrics. And since I obviously couldn’t get an actual magpie for my scene, I researched the birds extensively and then sculpted my subject out of foam to ensure the shadows would fall perfectly
