Beet Up Truck

  • A driving study in contrasts for the beet generation

It’s a bumper crop! A white pickup tootles along, the bed filled to the brim with gigantic beets. Wouldn’t it be marvelous to see a truck with produce that big in it?

You may be aware of my propensity to pair produce with vintage toy trucks. I find the combination of the weathered metal and the organic surfaces of the veg to be a delight for the eye. In Beet Up Truck, I kick the contrast up even more, coupling the deep purple beets with a white truck.

  • Beet Up Truck was designed for drama! I used a floodlight effect, washing the subjects with illumination to highlight the skin of the beets and create glossy reflections on the wood shelf. I also added a light from the left-hand side, to tease the eye with a bit of shadow play.

    Other details

The vintage pickup was made by the Wyandotte toy company and is called a “stake truck” because of the slats on the truck bed. I have several of these marvelous toys in my collection.
