Hanging Out at the Drive-In
A love letter to the American car culture of the 1950s
As a boy growing up in Britain, few things caught my my attention like the hot rods and muscle cars being manufactured in post-war America.
Hanging Out at the Drive-In explores these automotive glory days by pairing classic toy cars with a sign for that uniquely American concept, the drive-in burger joint.
The background of Hanging Out at the Drive-In is meant to evoke a hand-painted billboard of the era, but weathered and aged like it would look today. To create the sign, I started by painting the canvas to look like the texture of real wood. Once I achieved the appropriate wooden look to the base, I then painted a full sign in bright colors.
Once the sign was painted, I laid the canvas on the studio floor and scoured off the whole surface with a green kitchen scrubber to add decades to the sign’s appearance.
This technique is one of many that I borrowed from the world of abstract art to, oddly enough, add more realism to my work. (You can see more of my images that use these abstract techniques here: Richard Hall prints with abstract art.

All of our prints are finished with a coating that protects the print and enhances light-fastness; we use the highest quality pigmented inks with an estimated lifetime of 118 years.
Canvas giclées: Edition of 50 (for all sizes), signed and numbered on the back of the piece. Archivally mounted or stretched and hand-coated with protectant. Framed canvas giclées are hand-framed in our studio with an espresso-colored frame with gold-tone lip. Unframed canvas giclées should not be framed with glass.
Paper giclées: Edition of 250 for 12” x 16” sizes; edition of 125 for 18” x 24”. Printed on high-quality, acid-free paper and comes with a hand-cut mat that fits into a standard-size frame. We recommend that you use a frame with glass to ensure longevity of your paper print.
