If you are familiar with my still life work, you are aware of my fondness for pairing fruit and veggies with vintage items, especially toy trucks.
In Going Bananas, I also added some comedic drama in the form of a banana robbery, in progress, by three thieving primates. Let the chimps fall where they may!
Going Bananas was designed to be a study of yellow across several textures (organic, metal, and shellacked wood). It was included in the 2012 Southwest Art article on my work: “Richard Hall’s trompe-l’oeil paintings beguile with wit and nostalgia”.
I have a newfound respect for food stylists after painting Going Bananas. As it turns out, bananas placed under spotlights go from bright yellow to mushy glob in a maddeningly short period of time. I re-created this scene multiple times before I was through.
