Caio! Ready for our picnic, darling?
Roman Holiday was inspired by a chance sighting at a restaurant. My wife, Sharon, and I went to dinner and parked in the lot was a charming pink Vespa. I could just picture Audrey Hepburn with her gloves and sunglasses zipping around the streets of Rome with Gregory Peck in tow. (Dinner had to wait a bit while I snapped photos!)
- The background for Roman Holiday is meant to evoke the kind of aged building you would pass while wending your way through narrow cobblestone streets. I used layer after layer of paint, applied with abstract art techniques, to suggest the weathered stucco patina. These colors I used are a departure from my usual palette, and I enjoyed working with them for my desired effect.
The scooter pedal car is from the 1960s, and is actually painted blue. I changed the color based on my parking lot inspiration and to have Roman Holiday serve as a companion piece for Retail Therapy, another homage to a girl’s day about town.
