Ice Cream Peddler

  • Freeze a jolly good fellow!

What a sublime 1950s toy - a pedal car for kids where they can pretend to drive a Good Humor ice cream truck!

The back end of the vehicle opens to a compartment to store ice cream (real or pretend). Toys like this are so evocative; even though I never had a car like this, I can picture budding entrepreneur of 65 years ago pedaling along, selling his or her wares to teddy bears and younger siblings.

  • I wanted to create a portrait of this toy that would bring the viewer along in the nostalgia. The truck itself is placed on an old copper basin and crowned with two jars of coins representing a successful outing or two. In addition to fixing the scene in a certain era, the basin also echos the bright 50s colors you see on the toy’s chassis: turquoise, pink, and ochre.

Lighting is daytime bright, with additional spotlighting from the lower left to add interesting shadows to the composition, such as the elongated handlebar shadows and the shadows of the light through the glass jars.

    Other details

This same pedal car body style also came painted as a police warden vehicle - a fun diversion for the kiddies that also cleaned up the neighborhood of teddy bear riff-raff and ne’er-do-wells.
