Schoolboy humour or just good science? You decide!
Cracked features a doctor trying to get to the bottom of a medical mystery.
I often use a chalkboard backdrop when painting these whimsical potato toys so that you, the viewer, can eavesdrop on their conversation. To get that authentic chalkboard feel, I first paint the background color, here that perfect “chalkboard green.” Then, I draw on the painted surface with oil pastels and “erase” with a rag, wiping and smudging to get a pleasing, chalky appearance. Then, I paint the foreground and redraw the final background scene and write the dialogue.
This painting stems from a real-life anecdote told to me by my son. My granddaughter fell in the playground at school and was taken to the school nurse. The nurse checked my granddaughter, and said “You’re okay, but there is a big crack back here!” Few things are as funny to elementary school kids as a joke about a backside - and as it turns out, adult painters find such jokes funny, too.
Once I knew that I wanted to paint a potato toy medical scene, I had to create the accessories from my mind’s eye. The stethoscope, glasses and mustache, and nurse’s cap were all from my imagination and not the toy box.
