These grapes were just TOO enticing at the grocery store for me to pass by. (Not sure any other still-life artist could have resisted, either.) Piled in one of my favorite toy trucks, they make the perfect scene for anyone who loves plants, farming, or a nice glass of wine.
Psst! Want to know the secret to painting grapes? You must have them in front of you. Capturing all the little blotches, powdery fingerprints, and individual splashes of light reflecting from the orbs requires you to paint from life to get the most realistic effects.
I chose the yellow tones of the truck to be a perfect color complement to the indigo-black hues of the grapes. I kept the background simple and muted to not distract from the dramatic shadowplay that completes the visual. I used abstract painting techniques on the shelf to offer a distressed-but-subdued look to tie in both the vintage truck and the subtle background.
The vintage toy pickup was made by the Wyandotte company and is called a “stake truck” because of the slats on the truck bed. I have several of these marvelous toys in my collection and enjoy painting them often. Click here to see more Wyandotte trucks in my work.
