Breakfast Special: Ham'r and Eggs

  • The award-winning image that garnered national attention

Breakfast Special was one of the first paintings I created after starting to think differently about what a still life could be.

Imagine my delight as this image went on to win multiple awards, including the 2010 Donor’s Award of Excellence at the Oil Painters of America National Show. The awards were a signal that I was on the right path of using everyday and discarded objects to create intriguing fine art.

  • I feel that the appeal of Breakfast Special is the sense of movement, action, and anticipation in the piece. At any moment, the candle will burn through the string, the hammer will fall and hit the vice, and the egg will crack.

To heighten the tension of the scene, I wanted the background to be very dramatic with no shadows. I placed this contraption as if on a stage - all the characters are in place, the scene is set, and the performance is just about to occur.

    Other details

Breakfast Special was included in a 2012 Southwest Art article on my work: “Richard Hall’s trompe-l’oeil paintings beguile with wit and nostalgia”.

Take it from me, putting eggs in a vice without breaking them is harder than it looks.

  • All Richard Hall prints are limited edition and hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

All of our prints are finished with a coating that protects the print and enhances light-fastness; we use the highest quality pigmented inks with an estimated lifetime of 118 years.

Canvas giclées: Edition of 50 (for all sizes), signed and numbered on the back of the piece. Archivally mounted or stretched and hand-coated with protectant. Framed canvas giclées are hand-framed in our studio with an espresso-colored frame with gold-tone lip. Unframed canvas giclées should not be framed with glass.

Paper giclées: Edition of 250 for 12” x 16” sizes; edition of 125 for 18” x 24”. Printed on high-quality, acid-free paper and comes with a hand-cut mat that fits into a standard-size frame. We recommend that you use a frame with glass to ensure longevity of your paper print.
