  • My first ever Christmas image

Few experiences are as tantalizing for a child as waiting for Saint Nick to arrive on the night of Christmas Eve. For all of you who put out a plate of cookies and listened intently for the jingle of sleigh bells in the sky, I present Noel, my homage to the magic of the holiday season.

  • In Noel, I used abstract painting techniques to create the luminous night sky. I painted gradient layers of deep blue, then used spray bottle filled with a turpentine/paint wash to spritz on the stars.

The initial focal point of the painting is the hand-folded origami star at the top; from there, the eye travels to Santa’s sleigh before resting on the Christmas message spelled out on the blocks.

    Other details

I had wanted to paint a Christmas image for some time but needed the proper inspiration to get started. I found in this 1923 Ferdinand Straus “Santee Claus Reindeer and Sleigh” toy from 1923. I presented it almost as it appears in real life - though I couldn’t resist changing the sleigh runners to candy canes!

The toy features marvelous engineering - it has a mechanism that makes it look as if the reindeer are galloping along. The sleigh itself has intricate artwork lithographed on the sides, making it a prize among toy collectors.
