It's a Whale of a Tale
Whale Watching depicts a pod of whales enjoying themselves in the deep blue sea. The bathtub toy whale is happily swimming in a chalkboard seascape.
The focal point of this piece is the whale, suspended by a string but part of the action in the chalk drawing.
Depicted behind the scene is a chalkboard To achieve the chalky surface look, I drew on the painted background with white oil pastels, then erased, just like you would do with a real chalkboard.
This is one of my favorite vintage toys. It's an old bath toy, made in post-war japan. It has a key to wind up, and a small propeller moves it through the bathtub as water spritzes out through the blow-hole.
