Waddle you do with this charming decoy print?
Duck Tape is one of my earlier wordplay works where I was beginning to explore visual punning. Even though I have since created more complex images, I still love this image for its range of textures and ultra-realistic touches.
- I kept the lighting bright in the foreground and dim in the back to draw focus to the surface qualities of the subjects. It is the glint of light off the painted wood and rubbery tapes that enhance this visual-tactile sense, where you see the image but can practically feel it in your fingertips.
For further visual interest, I twisted the masking tape at the top into an origami-like duck shape.
The decoy is a real antique, not a replica, found in the same antique store where I bought my very first toy truck to paint. (That antique store has been very good to me.) Although there are skillful reproductions of decoys available, I believe that having this object with its real, time-worn patina gave me the ability to create a painting with more depth.
