I admit it, I have a sweet tooth and love donuts, so I have taken it upon myself to revise the current nutritional guidelines.
Oddly enough, governments and science have yet to accept my well-tested model. (Believe me, I have tested this plan extensively.) I urge you not to glaze over it, however. Maple you’ll find it valuable to explore for yourself.
The chalkboard background of Five Food Groups allows me to narrate the story with words in addition to visuals. (Imagine how much different it would be to just have five donuts, suspended in air, with no context.) To make the chalkboard look real, I treat the background like I would a real chalkboard, writing on it (with oil pastels) and then wiping of the words as if I were erasing before composing my final thoughts.
Narration aside, all the drama in Five Food Groups comes from the jet-black shadows emanating from the strings and the donuts. This effect - achieved with strong lighting from the top left - pulls your eye down from the title at the top all the way to the donut at the bottom. And those delicious, mouthwatering-looking surfaces? They were also achieved by lighting, by ensuring that the illumination was bright and white to clarify and enhance the textures.
