Call to Duty is one of those unusual paintings where I didn’t add a touch humour; instead, I wanted to create timeless portraiture of an object that could have been a tot’s most treasured possession. I chose to keep the composition simple, letting the well-earned dings and dents tell the story of this beloved toy.
Apparently I’m not alone in thinking this pedal truck is beautiful. I have had dozens of people at art shows see this print and tell me their own childhood story of how much they dreamed of being a firefighter.
The background of Call to Duty was created using abstract art techniques: layers of broad strokes that add luminosity and depth. I chose a warm background palette and diffuse lighting to impart the feeling of the sun going down outside a playroom with at the end of a long play day.
Fire trucks were some of the most popular pedal cars made and ranged from fire chief cars to elaborate trucks with added gear. This particular truck, from the 1960s, has ladders and back platform for additional crew members - perfect for toting a little brother or sister on a teddy bear distress call! Call to Duty is a companion piece to Ol’ Yeller which features a toy tractor in a complementary portrait.

But chance intervened when a mischievous toddler added her two-cents worth to one of Richard’s still life settings, prompting Richard to see his work in an entirely new way. READ MORE
