Buzzy Bee is a "bee-loved" Fisher Price toy, first introduced in 1950, and produced for over three decades.
The focal point of this piece is the bee, suspended by a string but part of the action in the chalk drawing. The use of the string motif not only adds to depth and realism, but also helps guide the eye up and down the image. To achieve the chalky surface look, I drew on the painted background with white oil pastels, then erased just like you would do with a real chalkboard.
I actually have all three versions of Buzzy Bee. One is the queen bee with a little crown, one is orange and black, and another is the classic one you see in this painting. Buzzy Bee was one of the most popular toys produced by Fisher Price, full of action and sounds, with antennae on springs that move and bounce, wings that turn with a "bzzzzz" sound as it is pulled.
