I grew up in a small village in England, and like most people, we had a fruit orchard in our back garden. The fall harvest would bring a bounty of apples, which were picked and stored in the cellar. For the rest of the year we would have homemade apple pies, applesauce, and cider.
The background harkens back to my printmaking days. I found a lacy piece of fabric that I soaked in a sludgy pot of paint. I carefully laid the fabric on a piece of canvas, and used a brayer to transfer the paint. When I peeled the fabric off I was left with this intricate background design.
You can see a short video of the process on my Instagram page.
I'm always on the lookout for interesting bottles, jugs and pots. I look for unique shapes, colors and patinas to add an extra level of texture and shine to my paintings.
