A fisherman angles for a good day’s catch

What is the best way to catch candy fish and goldfish crackers? Gummy worms, of course!  In Something Fishy, a fisherman shows us how it’s done.

Composition details

As anyone who likes the sport knows, fishing can be full of drama! So I’ve bumped up the excitement level with the intense shadowplay in the background. Strong lighting produced the crisp effect I wanted - giving the shadows a starring role in the composition instead of a supporting one.

Other Details

The toy featured is a vintage fly fisherman balancing toy. Under his feet are little prongs that hold him upright; the fish below counterbalance him so that he will rock perfectly back and forth without toppling over.

Something Fishy is this toy’s debut in one of my paintings - I had to rescue it from the side of the bathtub where it sees good use with my seven grandchildren during bath time! (A similar story occurred with the gummy worms and goldfish crackers: I have to get them into the studio quickly because they won’t last in the kitchen when snacks are doled out.)
