My tribute to Andy Warhol

Just Add Water is part of my new series, Visionaries: My Tribute to the Innovators of Fine Art. In this image, I explore the work of the American painter and cultural icon Andy Warhol (1928-1987). Here, I present one of his most popular works, Campbell Soup 1.

About the Visionaries series

Every museum store in the world carries postcards of their most popular works. I have dozens of these cards featuring every style of painting imaginable.

In this new series, Visionaries: My Tribute to the Innovators of Fine Art, I explore the artistry of these painters - marrying their iconic images with both abstract backgrounds and ultra-realistic still life objects to create something entirely new.

I hope you enjoy them.

Composition details

Warhol worked in silkscreen, using a squeegee to apply swaths of paint in layers. The background was my nod to this technique, where I scraped very thin layers of grey paint, then applied the vivid red paint with a squeegee-like technique.

As a contrast to the graphic style of the postcard and the abstract background, the vintage can opener and blue painter’s tape are painted in a highly realistic way, using classic still life techniques. For the tape, I employed the trompe l'oeil style - a visual illusion where the painted object looks real.  The tape looks like it is stuck to the surface, but it isn’t.
