My tribute to William-Adolphe Bougereau’s The Grape Picker

Bountiful Harvest is part of my new series, Visionaries: My Tribute to the Innovators of Fine Art. In this image, I explore the work William-Adolphe Bougereau (1825-1905), a French realist painter who specialized in painting the female form.

Bountiful Harvest is an homage to Bougereau’s lovely 1875 image, The Grape Picker, which depicts a young girl harvesting lush grapes at a vineyard.

About the Visionaries series

Every museum store in the world carries postcards of their most popular works. I have dozens of these cards featuring every style of painting imaginable.

In this new series, Visionaries: My Tribute to the Innovators of Fine Art, I explore the artistry of these painters - marrying their iconic images with both abstract backgrounds and ultra-realistic still life objects to create something entirely new.

Composition details

This image features traditional figural realism and trompe l’oeil optical illusions, all with the juxtaposition of classic still life fruit against a wildly abstract background.

To create the abstract background, I scraped paint with a palette knife and added stylized writing akin to graffiti. My goal was to make you feel as if you had one foot in yesterday and one in the modern world. Notice the large swaths of scraped on colors behind the “real” grapes; I added those as an extension of the original colors featured in the photo of the girl.

The final effect of Bountiful Harvest reminds me of every artist’s studio, where photos of beloved paintings are pinned to the walls. (Truly, I haven’t met an artist yet who didn’t have images taped up for inspiration.)

If you would like to see me work on the masking tape with its 3-D realistic trompe l’oeil effect, I invite you to see the video I’ve posted on Instagram: Bountiful Harvest on Instagram.
